At least six individuals lost their lives and 22 were wounded following an explosion at a bustling cafe in central Damascus, according to Syrian state media. The interior ministry reported that an explosive device was hidden within the establishment, situated just 100 meters from the Palace of Justice in the Hejaz neighborhood. As of now, no entity has claimed responsibility for the incident.
This tragedy marks the most lethal bombing in the capital since a suicide attack targeted a church in June 2025, which claimed 25 lives. Local business owner Mohammed al-Dahabi, who works nearby, described the scene as a traumatic flashback to the civil war era, noting the violent tremors and the sight of victims on the ground. Damascus Governor Maher Marwan Idlibi visited the site, vowing that those accountable for the violence would face justice.
The region has experienced repeated violence since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 by Islamist-led rebels. Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa continues to face challenges in stabilizing the nation and managing sectarian tensions between state forces and religious minorities.
