Severe flooding strikes Lagos following intense rainfall

Torrential rain has caused major flooding in Lagos, damaging homes and infrastructure as the Nigerian meteorological agency warns of more storms to come.

Persistent, heavy rain hit Lagos on Tuesday, causing significant flooding across Nigeria’s economic center. The national weather agency has issued alerts for continued precipitation in the near future. Although the rainy season in Nigeria typically spans from May to November, the combination of deficient infrastructure and poor drainage systems frequently turns these weather events into hazardous situations. As of Tuesday, there were no documented fatalities.

The inundation affected various sectors of the city, including affluent neighborhoods like Victoria Island and Lekki, where residents were captured on video navigating streets via wooden canoes. Social media footage also depicted submerged vehicles, homes, and businesses. Rukayat Saidu, a resident in Amukoko, reported that rising water destroyed her belongings and forced her from her residence.

Lagos, a sprawling metropolis exceeding 20 million inhabitants, struggles with blocked drainage and inadequate waste management, factors that exacerbate the flooding. Expert Olumide Idowu highlighted that rapid urban development and debris-clogged gutters prevent natural water absorption. The city is particularly vulnerable to climate change, characterized by rising sea levels and unpredictable weather patterns. Meanwhile, neighboring Ghana reported 12 deaths this week due to similar conditions. Nigeria’s meteorological agency had previously forecasted higher-than-average rainfall for the season.
