Severe Flooding in Onitsha Claims Three Lives After Intense Rainfall

At least three people died when heavy Saturday evening rainfall triggered dangerous flooding throughout Onitsha, Anambra State, causing road closures and infrastructure damage.

A severe rainstorm hit Onitsha, Anambra State, on Saturday evening, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals. The intense rainfall caused drainage systems to overflow, sending powerful floodwaters across major city streets.

Local accounts indicate that two bodies were located in the Akor area of the metropolis. A third victim, identified as a tricycle driver, was discovered near a Zenith Bank branch by the Ogboefere Market in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area. The storm, which started around 5:30 p.m., severely impacted traffic on key thoroughfares such as Awka Road, Oguta Road, Ojedi Road, and both the Old and New Market roads.

Drivers reported significant hazards as rising water levels hid deep drainage channels, forcing many to turn back. Alongside the loss of life, locals experienced notable telecommunications service interruptions following the storm.

The Anambra Keke Drivers Forum (AKDF) confirmed that the deceased tricycle rider was their member, Mmaduabuchi Elechi. His vehicle, marked KED 142 VN, was found near the site where his body was recovered. The forum has reached out to the public for help in notifying the victim’s family.

As of this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not provided official confirmation regarding the incident, with spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga remaining unavailable for comment.
