A major earthquake has inflicted substantial destruction along the Pacific coast of Colombia, according to government reports. Chocó province Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba confirmed that individuals sustained injuries, though specific figures remain unavailable. She further expressed apprehension regarding potential subsequent tremors.
Colombia’s geological service recorded the magnitude-7.4 seismic event at 07:34 local time, noting it occurred at a depth of 96km. The epicentre was located 5km east of San José del Palmar. However, the shaking reached as far as Bogotá, located hundreds of kilometres away, prompting evacuations of several structures in the capital.
Visual media circulated by the newspaper El Tiempo displayed a collapsed building in Manizales, located within the coffee-growing region, with bystanders expressing concern for those potentially trapped in the debris. This disaster follows the devastating twin earthquakes in Venezuela earlier this year that resulted in over 6,100 fatalities.
