Serbia Files New Indictment Over Novi Sad Roof Collapse That Killed 16

Serbian prosecutors have filed an updated indictment against 13 people, including former construction minister Goran Vesic, over the fatal roof collapse at Novi Sad’s railway station that killed 16 people last November.

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad said the defendants face charges of “serious crimes against public safety” and has requested that they be taken into custody.

The roof collapse, which occurred at the recently renovated station, became a symbol of alleged corruption and sparked near-daily protests that later grew into calls for early elections.

An earlier indictment, filed in December, was returned by judges in April for additional information. The supplementary investigation is now complete, according to prosecutors.

A separate investigation led by the prosecutor for organised crime and corruption in Belgrade is also underway, focusing on Vesic, his predecessor Tomislav Momirovic, and others. Additionally, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) launched an independent probe in March into possible misuse of EU funds during the reconstruction project.
