Senate Demands Escalation of Anti-Terrorism Efforts by Federal Government

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to increase military operations against criminal elements, following a successful rescue mission in Oyo State that highlighted both operational success and the sacrifice of security personnel.

The Nigerian Senate has formally requested that the Federal Government maintain and heighten ongoing military and intelligence campaigns against terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers nationwide. This resolution followed a motion presented by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, which received unanimous backing from all senators.

Lawmakers emphasized the need for the government to bolster security by acquiring advanced surveillance tools, modern hardware, and improved logistics, while also prioritizing the welfare of service members. The legislative body stressed that these enhancements should continue until citizens can safely navigate their daily lives without the threat of violence. Furthermore, the Senate insisted on the timely distribution of death benefits and pension entitlements to the families of fallen security agents.

The chamber praised President Bola Tinubu and the security services for the successful July 10 rescue of 39 pupils and seven teachers kidnapped in Oyo State. This operation, which concluded after over 50 days of intelligence-led efforts, resulted in several arrests and the neutralization of suspects. While celebrating this victory, the Senate honored three security personnel—Lt. F. A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sgt. Abena John Jerome—who died during the mission, and wished a full recovery to the injured Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain.

During the debate, Senator Adamu Aliero urged the military to prioritize the rescue of other children still held in Borno and Yobe. Meanwhile, Senator Adams Oshiomhole criticized Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde for suggesting a United Nations-led probe into the abduction, labeling it an affront to national sovereignty. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau concluded the session by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to supporting President Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to stabilize the nation’s security landscape.
