Senate criticizes Governor Makinde regarding UN investigation request for Oyo kidnapping

The Nigerian Senate has censured Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for requesting a United Nations inquiry into a recent kidnapping, labeling the move as trivializing a grave situation.

Members of the Nigerian Senate have voiced strong disapproval of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. The criticism stems from the governor’s recent demand for a United Nations investigation into the kidnapping of students and educators in the Oriire Local Government Area.

During a plenary session on Tuesday, senators urged the governor to refrain from diminishing the severity of such a distressing incident. The governor had made his request during a broadcast on Monday, shortly after the Nigerian military returned the rescued captives to state authorities.

In contrast, the Senate praised the military leadership, the National Security Adviser, and all personnel involved in the rescue for their bravery and professional conduct. The legislative body also extended sympathies to the families of the victims and honored the teacher who died while in captivity.

Legislators requested that the Federal Government expedite death benefits and support for the families of those affected. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of enhancing the resources and training of the nation’s security forces. The Senate concluded by encouraging citizens to aid security efforts by sharing actionable intelligence.
