Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe is facing calls for an apology after characterizing the 1996 Dunblane school shooting as “one murder.” During an appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, the Great Yarmouth MP made the claim while criticizing UK handgun laws. When prompted by the host, he doubled down on the description.
The 1996 incident involved gunman Thomas Hamilton, who entered Dunblane Primary School and killed 16 children and their teacher, Gwen Mayor, while injuring 15 others. The tragedy spurred the Snowdrop campaign, which led to the implementation of some of the world’s most rigorous firearm regulations.
Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr denounced the comments as profoundly disrespectful and inaccurate. He stated that the remarks diminish one of Scotland’s most painful historical events and demanded a formal apology. Local MSP Keith Brown also condemned the statements, describing them as despicable and labeling the MP a stain on the political landscape.
Lowe, who previously held a position with Reform UK before his suspension last year, has yet to issue a public statement regarding the criticism. The incident remains a sensitive subject in the UK, particularly regarding the legislative legacy of the massacre.
