Rachel Reeves endorses Andy Burnham for prime minister

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has expressed her support for Andy Burnham as the next prime minister, while stressing the importance of maintaining strict fiscal discipline within the Labour Party.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has publicly declared her support for Andy Burnham to succeed as the next prime minister. This endorsement comes despite speculation that Burnham might shift her to a less senior cabinet role if he assumes leadership of the Labour Party.

Burnham, recently sworn in as the member for Makerfield, is currently the sole candidate seeking the Labour leadership following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation. If no opposition arises, he could take office by July 17. Reeves stated she is focused on her current responsibilities, including potential energy bill relief, while leaving future cabinet appointments entirely to Burnham’s discretion.

Reeves emphasized that the next leader must strictly adhere to existing fiscal mandates, such as ensuring operational expenses are met through tax revenue and maintaining downward pressure on national debt. She highlighted the importance of avoiding the financial instability that characterized previous administrations, warning that a lack of discipline directly harms citizens through increased inflation and borrowing costs.

Regarding her tenure, Reeves noted her pride in managing the economy, citing a stronger financial foundation, rising wages, and stabilized inflation. She defended her loyalty to Sir Keir Starmer, dismissing questions about her absence during his resignation address as secondary to her six-year history of service to the outgoing leader.
