Rabid dog attack leaves five hospitalised in Yobe community

Five people are receiving rabies treatment after a dog attack in Yobe State, prompting urgent veterinary intervention and community safety awareness.

Five individuals from the Malam Matari district near Damaturu are undergoing medical care following bites from a rabid dog. This event has highlighted ongoing anxieties regarding public health and the management of animal-borne diseases within Yobe State.

To stop the virus from spreading, the Yobe State Pilot Livestock Development Programme dispatched a rapid response unit to the area. Dr. Bulama Maina Yaro, the program manager, confirmed that the patients are recovering and have started the necessary five-dose post-exposure rabies vaccination series.

Dr. Yaro noted that the immediate intervention prevented a larger crisis. The infected dog and two livestock animals killed during the attack were handled according to standard veterinary safety protocols, which included burial to mitigate transmission risks. Additionally, Dr. Yau Buba Wakil headed a community education initiative in Malam Matari to inform residents about recognizing rabies symptoms, proper emergency procedures after bites, and the critical need for prompt clinical treatment.
