The University of Ibadan governing council has officially named Professor Peter Olapegba as the institution’s 14th Vice Chancellor. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the university’s Pro Chancellor, Chief Bisi Akande.
Following a selection process involving eight initial applicants, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed five shortlisted candidates on July 22, 2026. Chief Akande, who previously served as the governor of Osun State, described the process as comprehensive, transparent, and highly competitive. Professor Olapegba ultimately secured the appointment based on his performance during these evaluations.
Professor Olapegba is a faculty member in the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Social Sciences and previously held the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration. He competed for the role against several other notable academics, including Professor Adeyinka Aderinto of the Sociology department and former Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Adebola Ekanola. The new Vice Chancellor is scheduled to officially begin his tenure on December 1, 2026.
