President Bola Tinubu has announced a strategic initiative to grow the Nigerian livestock industry, aiming to more than double its current $32 billion yearly economic contribution. Speaking at the 9th All Africa Conference on Animal Agriculture held in Abuja, the President emphasized that this objective is vital for enhancing food security, fostering job growth, and diversifying the national economy.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the President highlighted that Nigeria maintains a significant livestock population, including 58 million cattle, 64 million sheep, 124 million goats, and 660 million poultry. He noted that the newly formed Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, established in July 2024, serves as the cornerstone for transitioning the sector from traditional methods toward a technology-supported, commercialized industry.
The government is rolling out the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy to boost productivity and value chain efficiency. This plan includes investments in animal health, feed production, and genetic improvements. By promoting modern ranching and processing, the administration intends to reduce reliance on imported dairy and meat products while creating extensive employment opportunities for Nigeria’s youth and female population.
Addressing the international audience, President Tinubu underscored the importance of continental unity. He argued that challenges such as climate change and cross-border livestock issues require a unified response. He pledged Nigeria’s cooperation through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to ensure that the continent evolves into a global leader in livestock production.
