The Nigeria Police Force has officially rejected claims suggesting that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu directed officers to kill individuals possessing illegal weapons. The agency labeled the viral reports as inaccurate and a distortion of the IGP’s actual statements.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, released a statement clarifying that no such directive was issued during a recent meeting with stakeholders in Makurdi, Benue State. The police explained that the IGP’s remarks were intentionally misinterpreted to deceive the public.
During the event, the IGP highlighted that only authorized security personnel are permitted to carry weapons. He expressed concern regarding the prevalence of illicit firearms fueling various crimes, including kidnapping and banditry. However, he emphasized that officers must adhere strictly to Force Order 237, which governs the lawful use of force, rather than engaging in extrajudicial actions.
The police reaffirmed their dedication to professional conduct and the protection of human rights. They have urged the media and the public to verify information before disseminating it, noting that false claims undermine public trust in security agencies. To resolve the misunderstanding, the force has provided video documentation of the event to clarify the official context of the IGP’s address.
