The Oyo State Police Command has officially stated that forensic evidence cleared Inspector Gbenga Ayodele and Sergeant Ayilaran Boluwaji of wrongdoing regarding the 2021 shooting of Nurudeen Azeez. The two officers, assigned to Agodi Divisional Police Headquarters, were responding to a robbery report when the incident occurred.
DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command’s spokesperson, released a statement on Saturday clarifying that the investigation concluded back in 2021 found the officers innocent. The command felt compelled to reconfirm these findings after the case gained renewed attention through viral videos and media reports.
Nurudeen Azeez, a 30-year-old graduate of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, recently claimed he continues to suffer from the consequences of the injury five years later. According to Azeez, he was struck by a bullet on August 16, 2021, while riding a commercial motorcycle near Idi-Ape. He reported that he was shot, collapsed, and was subsequently approached by an officer before the police fled the scene amid public commotion.
The police report contradicts these claims, citing forensic analysis of fifteen recovered pellets, thirteen of which were documented and six processed as exhibits. Official records indicate that while Inspector Ayodele and Sergeant Boluwaji had checked out two AK-47 rifles for their duties that evening, the evidence does not support the allegation that they shot the victim.
