Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu traveled to Osun State on Friday to address rising fears of election-related unrest, revealing that at least 20 individuals have been killed in the region recently. Speaking at the state police headquarters in Osogbo, Disu cautioned political figures against inciting conflict, emphasizing that an election should not be treated as a battlefield.
Disu confirmed he received briefings from State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan and held talks with Governor Ademola Adeleke. During their discussion, Disu expressed concern over reports that certain criminal suspects were allegedly being hidden within the Government House. The police chief noted that Governor Adeleke responded by stating that he would support the arrest of anyone involved in criminal activities, even if it included members of his own family.
The Inspector General made it clear that those responsible for violence would face serious legal consequences. He stated that his personal visit from Abuja was intended to underscore that such criminal acts would no longer be accepted. While the police will work to ensure a safe environment for all political campaigns, Disu warned that anyone planning to disrupt the democratic process will be held accountable.
This visit occurs during a period of heightened political sensitivity in Osun. Recently, the Imole Campaign Council, which supports Governor Adeleke’s re-election efforts, requested the removal of Commissioner Gotan, citing concerns regarding his perceived partiality.
