Police arrest twelve following threats against Suffolk Islamic gathering

Twelve individuals are in police custody following a suspected right-wing terror threat that forced the early closure of an Islamic festival in Suffolk.

Authorities have detained twelve individuals in connection with a suspected right-wing terror plot targeting an Islamic assembly held at Shrubland Hall in Barham, Suffolk. Counter Terrorism Policing London stated that the UK Ijtima festival concluded prematurely on Sunday as a safety measure once officials identified the potential danger.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the law enforcement intervention, asserting that their swift reaction to what was deemed a credible threat surely preserved lives. Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London confirmed that officers conducted rapid arrests across multiple regions, with ongoing searches currently taking place at properties linked to the suspects.

Under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, eight men were taken into custody. Additionally, three men were apprehended on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, and one woman was arrested for allegedly assisting an offender. Three of these individuals remain detained, while one has been granted bail. Officials emphasized that they do not believe there is a persistent threat to the general public regarding this incident.

Addressing the situation, Mahmood acknowledged the anxiety this event causes for the British Muslim community, urging the public to reject hate and remain committed to a tolerant and inclusive society.
