Peter Obi Claims Plot to Assassinate Him During Planned Benue Visit

Presidential candidate Peter Obi alleges a plot to kill him during a planned visit to Benue State, citing a government advisory and a subsequent shootout as proof of the danger.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the upcoming elections, has claimed that an attempt on his life was orchestrated ahead of a trip to Benue State scheduled for April 2025.

Speaking at a European Council on Foreign Relations roundtable in Berlin focused on the future of Nigeria, the former Anambra State governor explained that he had called off a humanitarian mission to the region. This decision followed an official advisory from the Benue State government requesting that he avoid the visit. Obi expressed frustration regarding the government’s handling of the situation.

During the event, Obi highlighted that his caution was justified by subsequent violence, stating that a shootout occurred when he eventually attempted to enter the area. He emphasized that the state government’s warning served as an early indicator of the threat, asserting that the combination of the advisory and the ensuing gunfire confirmed a targeted effort to assassinate him.
