The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) Foundation recently supported over 200 disabled and impoverished women in the Kuje community of Abuja. The organization provided six-kilogram cooking gas cylinders and stoves to help these individuals transition away from using firewood for daily cooking.
Dr. David Owan, the National Treasurer and Foundation Chairman, stated that the initiative aims to protect women from chronic respiratory illnesses caused by inhaling smoke from wood fires. By promoting clean cooking methods, the foundation also hopes to reduce local deforestation, as many women currently travel long distances to gather firewood.
Engr. Maryann Ada Mbanaso, Secretary of the Foundation, highlighted that the project also addresses safety concerns, as women often face security risks while traveling to collect fuel. The foundation, which is supported by voluntary contributions from PENGASSAN members, was established in 2025 under the guidance of PENGASSAN President Comrade Engr. Festus Osifo.
During a visit to the palace of the 16th Gomo of Kuje, His Royal Highness Dr. Haruna Tanko Jubrin, organizers emphasized that the donation reflects their commitment to corporate social responsibility. Comrade Chidinma Anyanwu, Secretary of the PENGASSAN Women Commission, encouraged recipients to adopt these cleaner energy solutions to improve their long-term health. The traditional ruler welcomed the donation, noting that it serves as a meaningful step toward poverty alleviation in his community.
