Oyo Teachers Union Halts Strike, Sets Thursday Return

Public school teachers in Oyo State will return to the classroom on Thursday after the NUT suspended its industrial action following government security guarantees.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State has called off its strike, ordering educators back to their posts this Thursday. This shift follows fresh discussions with state officials regarding improved security protocols in the wake of a kidnapping incident involving staff and students in the Oriire Local Government Area.

Hassan Ajibola Fatai and Olukayode Salami, the union’s chairman and secretary respectively, released a statement on Wednesday confirming the return to work. The decision was reached after consultation with national leaders and requests from the state government to prioritize the welfare of students and staff.

The government has promised significant action to resolve the crisis. These measures include a new Joint Security Task Force to monitor school zones, efforts to locate and free the hostages, and the implementation of a comprehensive Safe School Initiative. Additional plans involve clearing criminal hideouts, updating school infrastructure, and deploying surveillance technology.

Union leaders praised the discipline shown by school staff and administrators during the work stoppage. While teachers are now set to resume duties on July 2, 2026, the union emphasized that members must stay alert and report suspicious activity immediately. The NUT stated it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the government honors its safety commitments.
