Oyo State new hires urge Governor Makinde to scrap contributory pension mandate

New Oyo State civil servants are petitioning Governor Seyi Makinde to exempt them from the newly launched contributory pension scheme, citing concerns over financial hardship and the need for parity with current staff.

Recent recruits in the Oyo State civil service are opposing the mandatory contributory pension scheme recently implemented by the government. These employees, who joined the workforce this past January, submitted an urgent petition to Governor Seyi Makinde expressing their concerns.

The workers argued that the new policy will intensify the financial strain on staff. They formally requested that the governor permit them to remain under the previous pension framework. In their letter, they emphasized that they accepted their positions with the understanding that their benefits would match those of their established colleagues. The petition suggests that maintaining the old system for those hired in January 2025 would preserve workplace morale and ensure fairness within the public sector.

This appeal follows the state’s announcement last week regarding the adoption of the contributory model for all new civil service entrants.
