Over 20 Dead and Policeman Missing After Attack on Plateau Village

A late-night raid by gunmen in Plateau State’s Bokkos area has resulted in over 20 fatalities and the disappearance of a police officer, despite earlier security warnings.

A police officer is currently unaccounted for following a deadly assault on Kawel village in the Mushere Chiefdom of Bokkos, Plateau State, which claimed the lives of more than 20 individuals on Sunday night. Conflict reporter Masara Kim confirmed that over 100 armed assailants, identified as Fulani militias, raided the settlement around 10:30 p.m. while the villagers slept.

The attackers reportedly bypassed local youth volunteers and moved systematically through homes, targeting residents in their beds. Those who attempted to flee into the surrounding wilderness were shot or killed in the process. Adams Ayuba, a resident, noted that the community had previously alerted security forces about suspicious activity in the area, but these warnings went unheeded. Ayuba also stated that a local youth, who serves as a police officer, remains missing after attempting to resist the raid.

The tragic event has devastated families, with survivors reporting significant losses. Patience Ibrahim shared that four of her relatives were murdered within a single home. As of now, the Plateau State Police Command and the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace have not issued a formal response regarding the massacre.
