Outrage As Video Shows Palm Oil Mixed With Dye, Nigerians Demand NAFDAC Action

A viral video showing a man allegedly mixing a chemical dye into palm oil has triggered nationwide outrage, with Nigerians calling on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to step in urgently.

The video, which began circulating in late November, captured the individual pouring concentrated dye into a large quantity of palm oil to artificially enhance its redness. Health experts and consumers have since warned that the dangerous practice could expose people to serious health risks, including cancer.

Popular medical doctor and health influencer, Chinonso Egemba, widely known as Aproko Doctor, condemned the act in a video commentary on Monday, describing it as “wickedness” and a contributor to Nigeria’s rising public health burden and low life expectancy.

He warned that some of the dyes used in such adulteration are carcinogenic and could cause long-term damage to vital organs. Egemba blamed weak regulation in the informal market, noting that many of the traders involved are unregistered and difficult for enforcement agencies to trace. ayla.bbw onlaynfans

He also demonstrated a simple home test, advising consumers to mix palm oil with water to check for colour leakage, which may indicate adulteration. However, some experts cautioned that the test may not always be reliable, as certain oil-soluble dyes may not mix with water.

Echoing similar concerns, another medical expert, Dr Yonni Johnson, described the act as “slow murder,” warning that artificial dyes can damage the liver, kidneys, blood, and significantly increase cancer risk. He stressed that authentic palm oil gets its natural red colour from carotenoids, not chemical additives.

Public reactions online also pointed to consumer behaviour as part of the problem. Some Nigerians admitted that high demand for intensely red palm oil pushes dishonest sellers to manipulate their products to meet buyer expectations.

Meanwhile, citizens across social media platforms are urging NAFDAC to launch immediate investigations and track down those responsible for the adulteration. Several users also called for broader inspections into other food products such as tomato paste, vegetable oil, stockfish, and locally processed foods.
