Nigeria and Brazil have formed a strategic alliance to scientifically validate African traditional medicine. During a bilateral meeting at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, representatives from both nations established a roadmap to foster research, technology sharing, and public health innovation.
The Ooni of Ife’s delegation joined Brazilian officials and academic experts to push for greater worldwide acceptance of indigenous healthcare. Otunba Moses Olafare, speaking for the Ooni, stated that the partnership will rest on three pillars: indigenous wisdom, traditional plants, and scientific research. The goal is to blend ancestral knowledge with rigorous evidence-based methods to improve global public health.
Key aspects of the collaboration include joint studies on medicinal plants, particularly those used for diabetes treatment. Both nations intend to support the creation of a Human Milk Bank in Nigeria and align their efforts with international climate and biodiversity goals. The Yoruba delegation further noted that healing in their culture encompasses spiritual practices and oral traditions, which they hope to see recognized alongside clinical findings.
Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, who led the Nigerian delegation, emphasized that this partnership serves to elevate African cultural and scientific heritage. Additionally, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde of Afe Babalola University showcased the school’s success in creating practical healthcare products from traditional research. The final implementation framework includes a formal Memorandum of Understanding, the formation of a joint working group, and plans for postgraduate training and collaborative publishing.
