Onitsha to host yearly Ofala Festival this October

The Obi of Onitsha’s palace has scheduled the 2026 Ofala Festival for October 16, focusing on the theme of resilience and community progress.

The Palace of the Obi of Onitsha confirmed that the yearly Ofala Onitsha Festival is scheduled for October 16, 2026. This year’s event carries the theme, “From Resilience to Progress.” Okechukwu Mike Areh, the lead of the Ofala Steering Committee, stated that this theme embodies the shared determination of the local community to protect their cultural legacy while fostering future growth.

Areh highlighted that the festival is the most significant event in the regional calendar, rooted in deep spiritual and traditional practices. The celebration marks the Obi’s annual emergence from seclusion, a period meant for securing the kingdom’s prosperity. Additionally, the festival honors the historical realization that yams are a vital food source, representing a time of thanksgiving and renewal for the populace.

Beyond its ritual importance, the Ofala has transformed into a comprehensive cultural celebration. It will now host an international art exhibition, a youth carnival, and various health outreach programs. Organizers anticipate a large turnout of traditional leaders and visitors from throughout Nigeria, highlighting Onitsha’s status as a key cultural hub.
