A High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State, has authorized Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, to serve legal documents to Kenneth Okonkwo using substituted service. This decision follows failed attempts to deliver the paperwork personally. The presiding judge ruled that the documents may be left with an adult at Okonkwo’s previous address in Nsukka, Enugu State, or affixed to the premises directly.
The dispute stems from accusations by Okonkwo, who claimed that Obi and other NDC officials in the South-East solicited extra funds from National Assembly aspirants. Okonkwo alleged he possessed receipts to verify these claims and further accused Obi of managing candidate lists from an Abuja hotel, implying dishonest and criminal behavior. In response, Obi’s legal representatives issued a formal demand for a public apology on social media and Channels Television, a retraction, a pledge to stop future defamatory remarks, and N5 billion in damages.
