Ojukwu University VC Defends Dismissal of Staff Facing Misconduct Charges

Vice Chancellor Kate Omenugha defends the dismissal of five lecturers for misconduct, dismissing counter-accusations and emphasizing her commitment to student safety and institutional reform.

Prof. Kate Omenugha, the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State, has responded to backlash following the termination of five senior lecturers. Last month, the university administration dismissed these individuals for various infractions, including neglect of duty and sexual harassment. In response, some of the former staff members leveled counter-allegations of corruption and academic decline against the current administration.

During a press conference held on Thursday, Prof. Omenugha rejected these claims, labeling them a diversionary tactic aimed at obscuring the primary reasons for the dismissals. She asserted that her actions warrant praise rather than criticism, particularly regarding her firm stance against the sexual exploitation of students. She emphasized that such behavior, which had persisted under prior administrations, is unacceptable under her leadership.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted evidence, including sexually explicit videos, noting that affected students have provided testimonies despite claims from the accused that the footage was fabricated using artificial intelligence. To ensure transparency, Omenugha confirmed that an appeals committee has been established, allowing the dismissed lecturers an opportunity to formally challenge their termination. Furthermore, she outlined her long-term vision for the institution, pointing to ongoing infrastructure projects funded through TETFUND and external support as key to the university’s future growth.
