Ohio Surgeon Accused Of Forcing Abortion Drugs Into Girlfriend’s Mouth While She Slept

A 32-year-old surgical resident in Ohio, Hassan-James Abbas, is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly forcing abortion-inducing drugs into his pregnant girlfriend’s mouth while she slept, leading to the loss of her pregnancy.

Abbas, who was undergoing medical training at the University of Toledo, is accused of fraudulently obtaining Mifepristone and Misoprostol through a telemedicine provider by using his estranged wife’s identity. Investigators say he later crushed the pills and administered them without his girlfriend’s consent.

The victim told local station WTOL 11 that she woke up during the assault to find Abbas restraining her and pushing the crushed medication into her mouth. She said she feared for her life during the encounter.

“I kept thinking he was going to kill me,” she said.

Although she survived the ordeal, she later learned at the hospital that her pregnancy had been terminated due to the effects of the drugs.

According to documents from the Ohio State Medical Board, the woman had been dating Abbas for only two months when she discovered she was pregnant in December 2024. After sharing the news with him, she said he reacted angrily and revealed for the first time that he was married but separated. He reportedly pressured her to terminate the pregnancy, but she refused.

The following day, investigators say Abbas obtained the abortion medications using his wife’s name. Days later, the victim began experiencing nausea. On the night of December 18, she allegedly woke up to Abbas holding her by the neck while forcing a crushed substance under her lip. She managed to escape to the kitchen and called emergency services.

Medical records state that she later presented at the hospital with vaginal bleeding and reported being assaulted. It was there she was informed that the pregnancy had ended.

In July 2025, Abbas allegedly admitted to the Medical Board that he had crushed the pills to speed up absorption and that he had altered the method of administration from standard instructions. He reportedly claimed the woman consented a claim authorities dispute.

The Ohio State Medical Board suspended his medical license after determining he violated multiple medical regulations. He has since been charged with abduction, unlawful distribution of abortion-inducing drugs, identity fraud, evidence tampering, disrupting public services, and deceptive acquisition of dangerous drugs.

Abbas was indicted on November 5 and is scheduled for arraignment on December 19.
