NRC Leadership Advocates Enhanced Security Partnership and Harsher Sentencing for Infrastructure Vandals

NRC Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa is pushing for closer security ties and tougher legal consequences to stop the rampant theft of railway infrastructure nationwide.

Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, has pledged to bolster ties with the Nigeria Police Force to better shield national rail assets. During a visit to the Oyo State Police Command in Ibadan, he met with Commissioner Olugbenga Abimbola and Nigeria Railway Police Commissioner Lasisi Titilola to discuss security strategies.

Opeifa praised the successful capture of three individuals caught moving ₦200 million worth of stolen railway components from Niger State to Lagos. He emphasized that this intelligence-driven success highlights the value of ongoing cooperation between state authorities and the corporation. He further urged that arrested vandals must face rigorous prosecution to discourage future crimes against public property.

To protect essential transit networks, Opeifa called for broader cooperation involving host communities and local governments, while encouraging the public to report suspicious activities. In support, Commissioner Abimbola requested that the National Assembly revise current legislation to impose more severe punishments for those targeting critical infrastructure. The recovered materials and suspects are currently under the jurisdiction of the Railway Police for continued legal proceedings.
