NiMet Issues Three-Day Forecast of Rain and Thunderstorms Nationwide

NiMet projects a three-day period of thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday, including warnings for potential flash flooding and safety precautions.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook covering Wednesday through Friday, warning of widespread cloudy conditions and thunderstorms across Nigeria. The forecast indicates that the northern region will see scattered clouds on Wednesday, with morning storms likely in Taraba and Kebbi. By the afternoon, moderate rains and thunder are expected in several northern states including Borno, Kano, and Katsina.

In the North Central region, residents should prepare for morning rain, followed by more intense thunderstorms throughout the afternoon and evening. The southern region will experience a cloudy start with morning rainfall across states such as Lagos, Rivers, and Delta, eventually leading to widespread moderate rain as the day progresses.

The pattern continues on Thursday with expected storms in the north and central regions. The agency also highlighted a heightened risk of flooding in states like Imo, Abia, and Cross River. By Friday, the forecast suggests intermittent sunshine and clouds in the north and central areas, with continued rainfall likely in the south. The agency noted that strong winds may accompany these storms.

NiMet has advised the public to take necessary safety measures, such as securing loose items and avoiding travel during heavy downpours. Emergency services in flood-prone areas should remain vigilant. Furthermore, aviation operators are encouraged to secure current weather reports to assist with flight safety, and all citizens are urged to stay updated through official meteorological alerts.
