For years, the hum of gasoline generators was a constant fixture in Nigerian markets and business hubs, serving as a lifeline for commercial phone charging operators who filled the gap left by unreliable electricity. Recently, however, this noise is vanishing as entrepreneurs transition to solar energy to survive harsh economic conditions.
The removal of fuel subsidies and rising petrol costs have made generator-powered businesses increasingly unprofitable. Kingsley Adeji, a kiosk operator with 50 charging ports, noted that he previously spent up to 9,000 Naira daily on fuel, leaving him with almost no profit. Faced with the risk of closure, Adeji invested in a solar inverter system. Now, with zero daily fuel costs, he has restored his profitability while providing a quieter service.
This shift is becoming widespread as solar energy becomes a survival tool rather than an environmental choice. Economics lecturer Fatima Bello explains that the traditional business model for charging services is no longer sustainable using fuel, as operating margins are too thin to absorb escalating energy costs. Instead, solar allows these micro-entrepreneurs to convert variable, draining expenses into a predictable investment.
Solar vendors are responding to this demand by creating specialized, modular systems that are affordable for small businesses. Distributors like Chidi Nwosu report that many shop owners are paying off their solar setups within six months using the capital they previously wasted on petrol. Where initial costs are too high, some vendors are even grouping together to purchase shared systems, proving the resilience of small business owners under extreme economic pressure.
