Nigerian Military Initiates Court Martial for 36 Officers Over Alleged Plot Against President Tinubu

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has officially convened a General Court Martial to try 36 military personnel suspected of involvement in a plot to topple President Bola Tinubu. This proceeding marks one of the most significant military trials held in the country in recent years.

According to an order dated April 17, 2026, and signed by Major General AM Alechenu, the trials are set to take place at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja. The tribunal operates under the authority of the Armed Forces Act of 2004.

The judicial panel features a tri-service structure, led by Air Vice Marshal HI Alhaji. It includes senior officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, with Lt Col. A. Mohammed serving as the Judge Advocate. The list of accused personnel comprises various ranks, ranging from Brigadier General to non-commissioned officers.

The accused include high-ranking officials such as Brigadier General MA Sadiq, Colonel MA Ma’aji, and several Lieutenant Colonels and Majors. Security at the venue will be strictly enforced by military police, with a complete ban on weapons and unauthorized electronic devices. All participants will be subject to security screenings, and the proceedings remain restricted to authorized individuals.

While the specific charges remain confidential until formally served to each individual, the military has outlined procedures for legal representation, allowing the accused to select their own counsel or be assigned one by the military at no cost. The court is mandated to submit a full record of its proceedings within 60 days following the conclusion of the trial.

This move follows widespread criticism from families and associates of the detainees, who have spent months in military custody. Relatives have expressed concerns regarding the lack of transparency, the inability to access legal counsel, and the absence of communication from military authorities. Critics have advocated for the matter to be moved to a public civilian court to ensure a fair and independent judicial process.

Separately, six other individuals, including a retired Major General, were recently arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja on treason and terrorism charges related to the same alleged coup plot. Those defendants have pleaded not guilty to the 13-count charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General.
