The Nigerian Embassy in Manila has issued a notice requiring all Nigerian citizens residing in the Philippines to provide proof of registration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Philippines (NIDOPHIL) before receiving consular services.
Announced on May 20, 2026, this policy also extends to Nigerian students and covers those living in Cambodia, with specific registration details for the latter expected soon.
Officials stated that the decision addresses the surprisingly low number of Nigerians currently in the NIDOPHIL database.
The embassy emphasized that this registry is vital for monitoring citizen welfare, maintaining accurate records, and organizing financial aid for those experiencing hardship. Contributions from registered members are used to support Nigerians who become stranded or face severe financial crises.
Strict enforcement means individuals failing to show registration evidence will be denied entry through the Dasmariñas Village Gate.
The embassy stressed that this measure is intended to improve accountability and coordination among the diaspora. Meanwhile, the Cambodian government has issued a separate, unrelated warning to all African nationals, ordering those without valid legal status to depart the country by May 31, 2026.
Authorities in Cambodia cautioned that those remaining after this date face potential arrest, a two-year prison sentence, and fines up to $8,000.
