Nigerian Army Initiates Revision of 2017 Defence Doctrine

The Nigerian Army has launched an effort to update its 2017 Joint Defence Doctrine to reflect modern security threats and operational needs, with feedback being collected from military commanders across the country.

On July 14, 2026, the 6 Division Headquarters of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt hosted a delegation from the Committee on Review of the Joint Defence Doctrine. The committee is tasked with updating the 2017 doctrine to better address contemporary security challenges and the evolving nature of military engagement.

Major General Ademola Adedoja, who leads the committee, met with senior officers and commanders to gather professional insights for the 2026 version of the document. Lieutenant Colonel Umar Adam, the Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, stated that General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, ordered the update to ensure the military remains aligned with current operational realities.

The review process, which officially commenced in June 2026, covers critical areas such as logistics, technological advancements, command structures, and inter-agency cooperation. Although reviews were intended to occur more frequently, previous attempts in 2022 and 2025 were unsuccessful. Major General Adedoja emphasized the importance of inclusive feedback, urging personnel to offer honest input based on their practical experience.

Representing Major General Emmanuel Emekah, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Brigadier General Emmanuel Adamu welcomed the team and guaranteed the Division’s full support for the project. The session concluded with officers providing specific recommendations to help shape the finalized doctrine.
