The Nigerian government has formally shared its grief regarding the death of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, at age 74. In response to the loss, Qatar has initiated a four-day national mourning period starting Monday, during which public offices will close and flags will be lowered to half-mast.
A statement released Sunday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, honored the late leader. The message described Sheikh Hamad, who governed from 1995 to 2013, as a visionary figure whose efforts significantly modernized Qatar. His influence on the region and dedication to global cooperation were highlighted as major elements of his legacy.
Representing Nigeria, Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu sent formal sympathies to the current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, and the citizens of Qatar. The Nigerian government expressed solidarity with the nation, offering prayers for peace and strength for the bereaved throughout this period.
