In a significant crackdown on illegal primate smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) detained a suspect and recovered a young gorilla in Kofar Mata, Kano State. The recovery marks a notable victory for authorities fighting organized wildlife crime.
The raid occurred on July 7 following extensive monitoring and data collection. It was a joint effort involving the NCS Special Wildlife Office, the Customs Intelligence Unit, the Customs Police Unit, the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, and the organization Focused Conservation. The official announcement was made via the service’s social media channels this past Thursday.
Assistant Comptroller of Customs Anuhu Mani, who leads the NCS Special Wildlife Office, confirmed that the infant gorilla is currently under medical supervision, where it is undergoing rehabilitation. Mani highlighted that the mission was specifically aimed at dismantling networks responsible for the underground primate market in the region. He praised the efficacy of cooperative, intelligence-led enforcement.
While officials are pursuing various leads to expand the investigation, Mani noted that the identity of the detainee and specific tactical details remain confidential to avoid compromising the case. The NCS maintains a strict stance against wildlife trafficking and continues to prioritize the enforcement of protections for endangered fauna throughout Nigeria.
