The Nigerian government has authorized the acquisition of 35 new linear accelerators to enhance radiotherapy availability nationwide. These units are scheduled for procurement between 2027 and 2029. Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced this initiative while meeting with the Global Advisory Council of the National Cancer Control Plan Technical Working Group. This project falls under the broader 2026–2030 National Cancer Control Plan.
Dr. Salako noted that construction is ongoing at six cancer centers, with three facilities already finished. Beyond treatment, the government is prioritizing early detection and prevention strategies. Efforts include increasing routine immunizations, specifically targeting human papillomavirus (HPV) to curb cervical cancer. Furthermore, screening services are being integrated into primary and secondary healthcare systems.
The Minister also launched the Blood Cancer Consortium to improve the management of hematological malignancies. Prof. Folakemi Odedina, chair of the Technical Working Group, emphasized the importance of fostering research and oncology clinical trials through international partnerships. The meeting concluded with a formal agreement between the Ministry and the Global Advisory Council to advance national cancer control goals.
