Nigeria and Benin implement satellite technology to secure shared border

Customs officials from Nigeria and Benin are adopting satellite-based geospatial tools to improve border surveillance and facilitate legal trade.

The Nigeria Customs Service and the Republic of Benin have established a new partnership to utilize geospatial technology. This initiative aims to increase economic safety, strengthen monitoring of the frontier, and support authorized commerce across the region.

The agreement was formalized during a session at the Seme-Krake Joint Border Post. Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, who leads the Seme Area Command, noted that this advancement represents a major step forward in regional border administration and the reduction of illicit trade activities.

Deputy Comptroller Labaran Ahmed, the leader of the geospatial unit for the Nigerian authorities, explained that the program incorporates the World Customs Organisation satellite system to track activity. By utilizing this digital mapping, officials can pinpoint weak areas along the boundary and station personnel more effectively to prevent smuggling and illegal entries.
