A group representing Christian women in Niger State has requested that Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, the First Lady, encourage her husband to prioritize the inclusion of Christians in his administration. This request follows the announcement that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago intends to maintain a Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket for the 2027 election.
The Concerned Northern Christian Women Forum (CNCWF) expressed these concerns during a meeting in Minna on Sunday. The group’s chairperson, Mrs. Grace Zegi, argued that while the ticket is constitutionally permissible, it prioritizes political convenience over the necessity of religious diversity in governance. Zegi emphasized that the state’s leadership should aim to unify the population rather than alienating specific religious groups, especially amid current security and economic difficulties.
Zegi highlighted that Christian communities often feel utilized for their votes during campaigns only to be marginalized when it comes to official appointments. She clarified that the forum remains supportive of Governor Bago’s second-term ambitions, as they backed his initial bid. However, they are calling for equity in how political positions are distributed between the two major religions.
The group urged the Governor to fulfill his previous promises of building an inclusive administration. They intend to observe future appointments closely, hoping that the Governor will address these concerns to foster greater unity and public trust across Niger State.
