The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) recently led a financial literacy initiative for pupils at Urban Model Secondary School, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. This effort coincided with the 2026 Global Money Week, aiming to improve students’ understanding of personal finance and the safety of their bank deposits.
Representing the NDIC, Principal Manager Toke Afolayan stated that the project, titled “Small Money Talks,” seeks to foster financial wisdom in youths and contribute to banking sector stability. The campaign taught students essential life skills, including effective saving, prudent investing, and responsible money management.
Afolayan emphasized the importance of choosing regulated banks over keeping cash at home, encouraging the students to prioritize needs and practice smart spending to avoid debt. Furthermore, Senior Manager Shehu Umar-Mohammed detailed how the NDIC protects depositors in licensed institutions and works with the Central Bank of Nigeria to maintain market stability.
State education officials and school leadership expressed gratitude to the NDIC for bringing this educational program to Ebonyi. The session successfully reinforced the role of deposit insurance in building public trust within the Nigerian banking system.
