Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, has urged telecommunications regulators throughout Africa to create formal systems for sharing professional insights. During the Head of Regulators Roundtable at the CPC-26 conference in Abuja, Maida emphasized that despite differences in market size or legal systems, regulators across the continent face nearly identical hurdles.
Maida noted that informal chats among peers frequently turn into discussions about pressing issues like infrastructure resilience, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. He argued that these gatherings should move beyond casual conversation toward a structured, intentional framework that allows regulators to learn from the successes and failures of their neighbors, preventing them from solving the same problems individually.
Rimini Makama, the NCC’s Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, supported this call by highlighting the rapid evolution of digital markets. She explained that traditional regulatory models are insufficient for the current era of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Makama stressed the necessity of leveraging the vast amounts of available data to move from reactive to proactive regulation. By sharing insights on consumer protection, market competition, and network resilience, African regulators can develop a more unified and effective approach to managing the continent’s digital transformation.
