Mazi Afam Osigwe, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, has confirmed that the DSS and international observers will monitor the upcoming July 18, 2026, elections to guarantee a transparent process. During an Abuja press conference, Osigwe emphasized that these independent entities will provide objective oversight to address concerns regarding the integrity of the vote.
Addressing claims of candidate imposition, Osigwe denied having a favorite among the three contenders: Olumuyiwa Akinboro, Lateef Akangbe Omoyele, and Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya. He criticized the Egbe Amofin group for allegedly attempting to dictate the candidate selection against constitutional guidelines. Osigwe asserted that the Electoral Committee of the NBA remains fully autonomous and independent from his influence.
To bolster confidence in the proceedings, the President announced he will abstain from voting. He denounced attempts to spread rumors or manipulate the election, noting that the goal is to elect a leader who commands broad respect. While acknowledging that a previously arrested service provider has been released, Osigwe reiterated his commitment to delivering the most credible election in the organization’s history.
