NAFDAC Warns Against Excessive Use of Hydroquinone in Bleaching Creams
The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians, urging consumers to avoid skin-lightening creams containing hydroquinone beyond approved limits, citing grave health concerns.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, NAFDAC’s Bauchi State Coordinator, Mr. Hamis Yahaya, emphasized that hydroquinone a chemical agent used to treat skin hyperpigmentation must not exceed 2 per cent concentration in cosmetic products.
“Hydroquinone at levels above 2% poses significant health risks. The skin’s melanin is a natural barrier against harmful radiation, and stripping it excessively through these creams can lead to dire consequences,” Yahaya cautioned.
He stressed that long-term use of such products could result in gradual health deterioration, cellular damage, and even cancer. He also condemned the growing trend of untrained individuals mixing and selling cosmetic creams in informal settings.
Yahaya reaffirmed that NAFDAC regularly inspects products in markets to protect public health and called on the media to help raise awareness about the hidden dangers of toxic skin-lightening practices.
“People should love and protect their skin. Black is not just beautiful it’s biologically protective,” he added.
