Australian Olympic gold medalist Mollie O’Callaghan has confirmed her availability for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, despite a recent medical directive to halt training. Last month, the 22-year-old was advised by doctors to immediately stop swimming after diagnostic imaging revealed stress fractures in her lumbar spine.
The current 200m freestyle world champion expressed that her spot in the Games, starting 23 July, appeared uncertain during the height of the diagnosis. Following additional medical reviews post-Australian Swimming Trials, clinicians cleared her to participate in the Glasgow event and the subsequent Pan Pacific Championships in California this August.
O’Callaghan, an eight-time Olympic medalist, shared on social media that the initial prognosis suggested she would miss the entire summer season. She acknowledged that her performance in the 100m and 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, and relay events might require a modified approach. Nonetheless, she remains committed to competing at full capacity for her national team.
