A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay an additional $567m, marking the company’s largest fine related to child safety concerns. Judge Bryan Biedscheid characterized the social media organization as a public nuisance, equating its impact on minors to environmental pollution that requires mitigation.
The court mandate stipulates that these funds must be directed toward programs designed to prevent future harm. This latest financial penalty arrives on top of a previous $375m judgment against the company, which Meta has indicated it plans to challenge through an appeal. The judge specifically drew parallels between Meta’s business model of advertising and the resultant psychological and sexual exploitation of children.
