Labour MP Samantha Niblett has officially launched a campaign aimed at promoting lifelong sex education. Her initiative, titled ‘Yes Sex Please, We’re British!’, seeks to improve public understanding of consent, healthy relationships, and mutual respect to help decrease instances of violence and abuse.
Despite facing ridicule and being labeled the ‘sex MP,’ Niblett maintains that her goal is to strip away the stigma surrounding these discussions. Her campaign events have included displays of educational materials, and she has partnered with expert Cindy Gallop to highlight the dangers of relying on pornography for sex education.
Official statistics from the Crime Survey for England and Wales suggest that millions of adults have been affected by sexual assault, reinforcing the need for better education. While some political figures from various parties have questioned the focus on this topic, arguing that constituents are more concerned with the cost of living or other local issues, Niblett emphasizes that the problem is not a partisan one. She aims to work with the Department for Education and the Department of Health and Social Care to implement systemic changes.
Niblett, who now chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Sex and Reproductive Health, argues that openly discussing topics like pleasure, menopause, and sexual health is essential. She believes that by normalizing conversations about healthy intimacy, society can better identify and prevent harmful behaviors. With backing from public figures like Emma Thompson and various professionals, the MP remains determined to secure a ministerial focus on the issue.
