Luis Garcia roots for Liverpool over friend Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea

Former Liverpool teammates Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso will face off in Malaysia as Chelsea wraps up their pre-season tour against Johor Darul Ta’zim.

Former Liverpool teammates Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso are set for a reunion in Malaysia as Chelsea concludes their pre-season tour. Garcia, currently serving as chief executive for Johor Darul Ta’zim, will host the London club at the 40,000-seat Sultan Ibrahim Stadium this Sunday. The duo shares a deep history dating back to 2004 when they joined Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool squad on the same day.

Reflecting on their shared past, Garcia recalled an early humorous encounter regarding their English language skills upon arriving in England. Despite their enduring friendship, Garcia is focused on the challenge ahead, noting that Chelsea represents a significant test for his side. Johor Darul Ta’zim holds an impressive domestic record, remaining unbeaten in 108 consecutive matches, and the match serves as a major milestone for Malaysian football.

Garcia expressed his support for Alonso’s managerial career but maintained his loyalty to his former club, stating he hopes Chelsea finishes behind Liverpool in the upcoming season. Under the leadership of the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Ismail Tunku, the club is investing heavily in infrastructure and professional coaching to elevate the standard of football in Malaysia. Inspired by Spanish football methodologies, the club aims to bridge the financial gap with elite Asian teams and eventually contribute to Malaysia’s aspiration of reaching a World Cup.
