Former world champion Lizzie Deignan has joined the Great Britain cycling team as a sporting director. This new position involves assisting the road squad at major competitions leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Deignan, 37, retired from professional racing last July following the announcement of her third pregnancy. Her storied career featured a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and a victory at the 2015 World Championships. Furthermore, she stands out as the first cyclist to claim all three monument one-day races: Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Tour of Flanders, and Paris-Roubaix.
Reflecting on her 43 professional victories, Deignan expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with a gifted roster of athletes. She noted that her primary objective is to provide the support necessary for riders to reach their full potential. She will collaborate with Matt Brammeier, the lead for both men’s and women’s road cycling. Brammeier described her appointment as a major achievement, highlighting her recent experience in the professional peloton and her ability to mentor the next generation of cyclists.
