Lil Nas X Enters Mental Health Diversion Program Following 2025 Arrest
A California judge has approved Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) for a mental health diversion program following his arrest in August 2025.
The rapper was originally charged with resisting arrest and assaulting police officers during an incident in Los Angeles where he was found wandering nearly naked.
Under the terms of the agreement, the felony charges—which carry a potential five-year prison sentence—will be dismissed if Hill successfully completes the two-year program and maintains a clean legal record.
The court’s decision follows Hill’s subsequent diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Judge Alan Schneider noted that the artist’s behavior during the arrest was a significant departure from his usual conduct and remarked that Hill appears to be progressing well with treatment. Hill, who previously spent two months at an Arizona recovery center, expressed deep gratitude after the hearing, acknowledging that the legal outcome could have been far more severe.
The incident has also highlighted the personal pressures facing the 26-year-old. His father, Robert Stafford, previously indicated that Hill’s mental health had been impacted by the stress of his career and his mother’s struggles with addiction.
With the diversion program now in place, Hill will continue a supervised regimen of therapy and psychiatric care.
