Legal Group Demands IGP Probe Into Alleged Obstruction of EFCC Officers

A group of lawyers is calling for a formal police investigation after officers allegedly interfered with EFCC officials enforcing a court-ordered property forfeiture in Abuja.

A legal collective known as the Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse and Torture (INAHURAT) has petitioned Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to launch an inquiry into officers accused of blocking the execution of a judicial mandate. According to a Wednesday statement, these officers reportedly used tear gas on EFCC personnel who were attempting to carry out a Federal High Court interim forfeiture order at a property in Abuja’s Guzape district.

Dr. Maxwell Opara, leading the group, condemned the June 29 incident at Plot 4022, O.B. Lulu-Briggs Street, calling it a display of institutional lawlessness. He urged the IGP to identify who sanctioned the deployment of police at the location, which is currently contested by an elderly widow and an Abuja developer, Rebecca Godwin-Isaac, also known as Hajia Bilikisu. Despite the confrontation, EFCC agents managed to detain two officers at the scene. Reports indicate that a significant amount of ammunition was also seized from the premises.

INAHURAT is pressing for full accountability, questioning why law enforcement was utilized to protect a property under a court-ordered forfeiture. The group praised the EFCC Chairman for upholding the rule of law while emphasizing the need for the police leadership to clarify its role in the incident to preserve national integrity.
