Taiwo Abidemi, a 67-year-old attorney, has been handed a seven-month jail sentence by a Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile) Court. His conviction stems from a violation of state environmental regulations.
Abidemi entered a guilty plea to three charges, which included disorderly conduct, illegal disposal of waste, and bypassing official Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste management services. These actions occurred on July 9, 2026, near Guinness Road in the Agege district, according to Jide Ajibola of the court’s Public Affairs Unit.
Prosecutor Adetunji B.E. presented the state’s case, resulting in the guilty plea. Chief Magistrate Adefioye F.J. emphasized that legal accountability remains universal, noting that environmental preservation is a shared duty. The court sentenced the lawyer to one month for the initial charge and three months for each of the subsequent counts, with the terms to be served concurrently.
Representing the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), Major Tokunbo Adekunle (rtd.) noted that the ruling serves as a warning that environmental statutes are applied strictly to all citizens. He reiterated that the government remains dedicated to upholding public health standards and that the mobile court will persist in its efforts to address environmental violations throughout the region.
